How to Make Paraloid B-72

How to Make Paraloid B-72

For the purposes of Art Conservation, a B-72 solution is typically made per 100 ml of the solvent you intend to use. If you want a 5% solution, you will only use 5 grams of pellets. Different concentrations of the mixture are used for different aspects of conservation.

Tools

  • Scale
  • Glass Jar with Tight Lid
  • Paraloid B-72 Pellets (Try Talas Online)
  • Cheese Cloth
  • Organic String (stay away from anything synthetic)
  • Small Funnel
  • Marker and Labels
  • Measurement Cup or Graduated Beaker
  • Desired Solvent(s)
  • Nitrile Gloves
  • Medium Professional Multi-Purpose Respirator (Try Home Depot)

Method

  • Take your scale and measure out 5 grams of your B-72 pellets.
  • Place the pellets in your cheesecloth and bundle it together with your organic string. Make sure to leave at least 12 cm. of string as a handle for the bundle. Drop the bundle into your glass jar and let the string hang out the side.
Put on your carbon filter mask and nitrile gloves. You will need this to decant your solvent. I have chosen to use Xylene.
  • Decant 100 ml of Xylene into your graduated beaker. It is important to get an exact measurement.
  • Pour 100 ml of Xyene into glass jar and shut the lid as tightly as possible. (**I like to put packaging tape around the lid of the jar several times to avoid leaking fumes. The fumes are noxious).
  • Let the jar sit over night and air-out your room. The pellets should be completely dissolved by the morning.
  • To remove the cheesecloth: Put your mask and nitrile gloves back on, remove clothe and string and discard it.
  • Stir or shake the solution. Place the lid back on and re-tape until next use.

Now you have B-72!
